Carnivore Nutritionist

Hello, I’m Charles Gumbley, a clinical nutritionist in Sydney. I advocate for a therapeutic carnivore diet as an intervention to support, manage, or remit symptoms and diseases. As a fully qualified clinical nutritionist who completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Clinical Nutrition), I understand I might get “burned at the steak” (pun intended) for using a meat-only elimination diet to help people with various issues. I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a debilitating autoimmune condition. Fasting and a carnivore diet approach helped me completely remit my symptoms. This not only had a profound effect on my life but also alleviated associated comorbidities such as depression, gut health issues, anxiety, skin problems, fatigue, and brain fog. I regained my ability to focus, felt happier and more confident, and returned to playing soccer, going to the gym, and enjoying time with my son. Many view the carnivore diet as extreme; however, I believe the extreme suffering caused by unmanaged spinal fusion and pain, depression, and inability to engage in everyday activities is far worse. This diet made me feel alive again, and I’m passionate about sharing its benefits with my clients.

A Clinical Nutritionist Approach

As a clinical nutritionist, I adopt a holistic approach, thoroughly analyzing case histories and environmental stressors contributing to disease states. In addition to a carnivore diet, I sometimes perform functional testing and prescribe nutritional supplements if I suspect nutrient deficiencies or imbalances. My focus is on tracking biomarkers and anthropometrics, including body fat percentages and weight loss, empowering people to take control of their health and thrive.

My Approach to the  Carnivore Diet  with My Clients

Like me, some clients may be ultra-sensitive to plant foods and certain animal products due to an overactive immune system. A strict elimination protocol is necessary in these cases, effectively removing stressors that could cause symptoms. A lifetime of consuming ultra-processed foods and exposure to environmental toxins can compromise our microbiome. This may result in a condition called leaky gut, where small gaps in the intestinal cells allow particles into the bloodstream, causing chronic inflammation and, in the worst cases, autoimmune diseases. Many doctors and individuals have found success with a carnivorous approach.

Are There Any Health Benefits and Is It Based on Research?

Research on strict carnivore diets is limited, but insights can be gleaned from studies on ketogenic diets. Some argue that a carnivore diet is more effective, particularly in cases with sensitivity to plant matter. The ketogenic diet, a low to zero-carb approach, has been extensively studied for over a century, initially for its ability to quell seizures. It has demonstrated effectiveness in managing epilepsy, weight loss, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular health, and neurological disorders. For women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), it has helped in hormonal regulation and weight management. The diet’s anti-inflammatory properties are being studied, potentially beneficial for conditions like arthritis. Additionally, some athletes turn to the ketogenic diet for its purported endurance and performance benefits.

Dr. Chris Palmer, a prominent psychiatrist, is exploring the ketogenic diet’s potential in treating psychiatric disorders, including depression. This research is part of a growing body of work investigating the diet’s effects on mental health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does the Carnivore Diet Involve?
As defined by Dr. Shawn Baker, it consists solely of animal products, excluding plants, fruits, vegetables, grains, sugar, and carbohydrates. It is technically a ketogenic diet, being high or moderate in protein with fats as the primary energy source.
What Can You Eat on the Carnivore Diet?
At its most unrestricted level, it includes all animal products: meat, beef, poultry, eggs, dairy (cheese, milk, and butter), fish, and organ meats. Some opt for a stricter approach, including only ruminant animals, salt, and water.
Is the Carnivore Diet Balanced in Vitamins and Minerals?
Contrary to popular belief, animal products are rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. They provide nutrients like Vitamin B12, heme iron, essential Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA), Vitamin D3, taurine, creatine, carnosine, cholesterol, and retinol, which are either absent or in minimal amounts in plant-based foods. Animal products offer complete proteins with all nine essential amino acids, making them crucial for those on strict vegetarian or vegan diets.
